After a successful beta period, the platform is now globally available with more features to help teams collaborate, create and customize display and video ads.

Increase relevance with customized ads

Consumers expect — and prefer — relevant ads: 80% of viewers say they are more open to advertising or branded content relevant to them. But delivering this experience in practice, and at any kind of scale, can be complex and cost prohibitive, especially for video ads. For this reason, many marketers have had to forgo the effectiveness gains that come from highly relevant, customized advertising. That changes with ad customization in Ads Creative Studio.

Now you can create multiple or even hundreds of versions of a single display or video ad. They can be customized for different audiences, locations, languages or contexts. Simply tell us what element of the ad creative — like a product image, superimposed text or sound — you want to set as ‘swappable’ and provide different versions of that element based on a set of rules you create. The rules include the audiences you want to reach or contexts you want to match.

For example, you might make a rule to change the text overlay on your video creative based on whether your audience is in the market for cold-weather gear or warm-weather travel. We’ll apply the rules quickly to all videos and render the different versions in a matter of minutes. Then, you can create and share a preview that shows every video, along with the rules that apply to that video, with anyone who needs to review it.

These features are available today for video creatives and will soon be launching for display.

Experience easier workflows across all your campaigns

We want to make it easier for media and creative teams to work together and at the same speed. A set of new features ensure that projects made in Ads Creative Studio can be seamlessly shared to all of our media platforms — Google Ads, Display and Video 360 and Campaign Manager 360.

First, you can now export images from the Ads Creative Studio asset library to the Google Ads asset library of any linked account. That means users within Google Ads can easily find those images and use them when assembling creatives for Performance Max campaigns, for example. You can think of the Ads Creative Studio asset library as a single, consolidated home for all creative assets, which you can then share with multiple media accounts for activation.

And second, you can now connect an Ads Creative Studio account to Campaign Manager 360. Ads Creative Studio was already available in beta to Display & Video 360 customers. Today, everyone can upload, manage and export HTML5 creatives directly to either Campaign Manager 360 or Display & Video 360. And, soon, you’ll be able to export video creatives as well.

Improve creative effectiveness and efficiency

Ads Creative Studio has helped brands and agencies cut down on time and costs and facilitate collaboration between media and creative teams. Men in Green, a creative agency out of the Netherlands was able to cut its creative production time in half using Ads Creative Studio and Display and Video 360. By implementing the platform into its workflow, the agency was able to maintain strict quality control for multiple creative assets while having different designers work on them simultaneously.

PepsiCo wanted to increase associations of the bubly brand with different contexts like house parties, barbecues, sports viewing and more. The company ran an experiment using customized videos built in Ads Creative Studio to see if occasion-specific messages aimed at relevant audiences could drive higher brand lift. PepsiCo found that campaigns with creative showing social gathering and food pairing situations were most effective. The path to customization was smoother and more efficient and, with a single tool, the team was able to standardize processes across functions.

In another instance, General Motors South America wanted to boost brand awareness of the Cruze 5 model. The brand decided to customize beyond the basics and needed to produce 14 unique ads without sacrificing time, budget or resources. Using Ads Creative Studio, the brand reduced costs by 30% and the campaign saw a 56% increase in Google searches for “chevrolet cruze” and a reduction in cost per view of 32% compared to the industry benchmark.

Ads Creative Studio is built to provide full support for creative teams and to enhance collaboration, creative effectiveness and scale. But a project in March 2021 led her in a new direction — working with cloud technology and ultimately becoming a Women Techmakers Ambassador.

She started working on a project for the Public Sector in London. The goal was to analyze thousands of responses to public policy consultations. She was collaborating with a customer engineer from the Google Cloud Platform team on the project, as it was her first time using the technology. After the two worked together, he suggested she participate in the Women Developers Academy, an intensive program for women in tech to develop their public speaking skills and confidence.

Annalisa was accepted to the Women Developers Academy a few months later. “For two months, they taught us how to contribute to the community via technical public speaking and writing blog posts, as well as how to prepare technical video content,” she says. After graduating, Annalisa was inspired to do more for the community of women in tech around her. “Joining the program motivated me to share my experience and inspire like-minded young women who want to pursue careers in tech,” she says. “I worked and lived in different countries between Europe and the U.S. and women are still a minority group in tech, especially in non-European countries.”

In December 2021, Annalisa became a Women Techmakers Ambassador, joining a global group of leaders around the world passionate about impacting their communities and building a world where all women can thrive in tech. Additionally, her first experience using Google Cloud Platform sparked her interest in new areas of technology and led her to a new role as machine learning engineering manager for PricewaterhouseCoopers. “I have always worked closely with engineers in high-performance computing environments, on the boundary of science and tech,” she says. “Now, I’m excited to move to machine learning engineering, spending most of my time on the cloud.”

Since becoming an Ambassador and getting a new job, Annalisa has kept quite busy. As an Ambassador, she’s been able to share her knowledge about Google Cloud, and is planning learning sessions in MLOps and Tensorflow. “I am meeting really inspiring people from all over the world,” she says. This role has also allowed her to mentor other women who are interested in getting into the tech industry, as well as participating in training sessions to help her grow her own skills.

In June — almost a year after she first participated in the Women Developers Academy — she took center stage to give a talk about the advantages of using fully managed Google Cloud services at the DataLift conference in Berlin. “The talk attracted many people, and the room was full,” she says. “I was talking about the challenges of a small team in machine learning operations, which is one of the hottest topics in data science right now.”

Tue, 12 Jul 2022 15:00:00 +0000https://blog.google/technology/developers/annalisa-arcella/DevelopersDiversity and InclusionarticleMentoring the next generation of women techmakersWomen Developers Academy and Google Cloud Platform helped Women Techmakers ambassador Annalisa Arcella become a machine learning engineer.https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Annalisa_Arcella_WTM.max-600x600.jpgGooglehttps://blog.google/technology/developers/annalisa-arcella/Caitlin MorrisseyGlobal Ambassador LeadWomen TechmakersInside Scoop: National Ice Cream Day with Google Mapshttps://blog.google/products/maps/national-ice-cream-day-google-maps/

What better way to beat the hot summer heat than with ice cream? Most recently I've been focused on how we can provide this to the Latino startup community, where gaining access to funding — the necessary fuel to grow their companies – is a constant struggle. Latino-led businesses are the fastest-growing segment of U.S. small businesses, but as an aggregate they only receive 2% of total U.S. venture capital funding, despite comprising 20% of the U.S. population.

This disparity is why we committed $7 million last year to help Latino founders grow their businesses and support the organizations already nurturing communities of Latino-led startups. We allocated $5 million of that funding to our inaugural Google for Startups Latino Founders Fund, and today at the UnidosUS Annual Conference in San Antonio, we revealed the 50 Latino founders who will each receive $100,000 in cash awards. They’ll also receive hands-on support and mentorship from Googlers across the company, $100,000 in Google Cloud credits, and access to therapy sessions to use as needed for any support they may need emotionally and professionally.

These Latino Founders Fund recipients have created amazing businesses that are already making a significant impact. They are helping solve some of the country’s biggest problems, from providing accessible, personalized reproductive health support to helping college graduates get out of debt and creating a more equitable legal system for Americans. That’s why we committed $1 million to supporting organizations that are dedicated to growing the Latino startup community. In the past few months, we connected founders across North and Latin America through our partnership with eMerge Americas. We teamed up with Visible Hands to launch VHLX, a new program to support Latino entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of their process; those founders received $10,000 in cash stipends from Google to help kickstart their ideas. And we recently wrapped our first Latinx Leaders Summit with Inicio Ventures, and will host a series of pitch competitions for aspiring entrepreneurs later this year.

We’ve seen firsthand what happens when we support underrepresented founders with funding and community.

Mon, 11 Jul 2022 16:00:00 +0000https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/entrepreneurs/latino-founders-fund-recipients/Grow with GoogleDiversity and InclusionEntrepreneursarticleIntroducing the first 50 recipients of the Latino Founders FundThey will each receive $100,000 in cash awards, hands-on support from Googlers and $100,000 in Google Cloud credits.https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Latino_Founders_Fund_.max-600x600.jpgGooglehttps://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/entrepreneurs/latino-founders-fund-recipients/Daniel NavarroGoogle for StartupsHelping AI startups grow in Africahttps://blog.google/around-the-globe/google-africa/helping-ai-startups-grow-in-africa/

In 2016, Dr. Anicia Peters discovered a problem. Dr. Peters, a researcher with the University of Namibia and chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on the Fourth Industrial Revolution, noticed that machine learning (ML) startups were not able to grow or shift quickly enough. She believed that early career, self-taught techmakers in the field lacked the necessary breadth and design fundamentals to successfully launch their businesses.

Dr. Peters saw a need to teach these fundamentals in a way that would be shareable across the region. The University of Namibia needed to develop a course that would address the need for African AI expertise and, therefore, the needs of these startups. However, that would require funding.

In 2020, Dr. Peters learned of Google’s new pilot funding program, the Award for Inclusion Research Program (AIR), managed by the University Relations team within Google Research. They had an open call for applications. Dr. Peters believed securing funding and mentorship from Google's AIR pilot program would help maximize the impact of the AI startups, break down barriers and bridge connections.

“You have to start small, so it's hard to convince funders who are looking for big numbers,” Peters says. “You know, how many people are you going to be impacting? Namibia has few people compared to other countries.” However, Google’s AIR program saw the potential for immediate and long-term impact and selected Dr. Peters for the award.

The funding enabled her to hire a staff member to manage the day-to-day operations of the program. This allowed her team to focus their work on social justice, specifically on inclusion, and ethics, increasing the numbers of African developers and ensuring anyone in Africa could access the resources needed to train as a developer. This funding helped secure these resources and meant they could invite experts to virtually teach, share knowledge and collaborate. “That’s part of what Google does through the University Relations program,” Peters adds. “They enable African university research and tech development.”

Dr. Peters had big plans to expand this project to other countries across Africa. Thanks to the relationships established through the AIR grant, she secured an additional Google research grant and recruited additional staff members to help with expansion. This expansion allowed the University of Namibia, which has a strong focus on agriculture, to develop AI technologies in partnership with their agricultural department.

“At one stage I was saying – Google if you want to come and help us, in Africa, then you have to join hands with those of us on the continent,” Peters says. “And I think that for me, this is one of the main messages: that now we are really walking the path together. I plan to use that time to reflect and renew my intention to enrich the lives of others through sacrifice — of money, time and resources. And there’s no reason why non-Muslims can’t join in these celebrations of reflection and giving.

That’s why I was happy to learn about eid.day — a comprehensive and friendly resource by Yaqeen Institute, a nonprofit organization that produces Islamic research in creative ways. When the .day top-level domain first launched, the Google Registry team worked with Yaqeen Institute to help them register eid.day and ramadan.day. These resources provide a look into key Islamic holidays, their significance, how they’re traditionally observed and the differences between them (like the differences between Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha).

So this Eid, I hope you’ll take a moment to visit eid.day to learn about the array of traditions, stories and celebrations that beautifully intertwine the Muslim community. It’s the birthday of the ARMY (Adorable Representative M.C. of Youth) — the ever-growing fan group dedicated to the band. To help celebrate the occasion, Google Arts & Culture is launching a unique collaboration with BTS: BTS x Street Galleries.

This collaboration will take fans on a Street View tour of the cities and buildings that hold special memories for BTS, from the United Nations in New York City to the Chunggu Building in Seoul, where BTS' stories began. In each of these locations, fans will be able to create their own Street Gallery, with artworks curated by the band, based on values that are close to their heart, alongside exclusive photographs and creations by RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, V, Jimin, Jung Kook.

Bridging art and pop culture, BTS x Street Galleries will bring a great variety of artworks, from 18th-century Korean “moon jars” toCaravaggio paintings, to a wider audience. It’s also an opportunity for fans to personalize their relationship with the band, their favorite art, and the places that have meant so much in the BTS story.

Whether you find yourself placing j-hope’s favorite painting on the United Nations building, or maneuvering one of SUGA’s own drawings on the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, you’ll be taking part in a wider conversation about art, public space and community. Yet, in this case, it’s an experience made possible by the collaboration of cultural institutions from around the world with Google Street View technology.

Google and YouTube have taken the ARMY Day celebrations one step further with even more fun. Just search for BTS and click on the purple balloon to hear a few special messages from your favorite band members. What's more, BTS unveiled a teaser video announcing the July 13th release date of the #MyBTStory “ARMY Tribute Video,” marking the culmination of the month-long Shorts challenge that had ARMY sharing some of their favorite BTS memories from the past nine years.

Ready to explore BTS x Street Galleries and learn about the band’s favorite artworks? Given our growing understanding of effective hybrid and remote learning, we continue to expand and modify the courses. For example, this year we adapted our popular four-part Tech Ethics self-study course to a one-part deep dive based on Googler feedback. Similarly, we launched the Responsible Innovation Challenge — taken by more than 13,000 employees — as a series of engaging online puzzles, quizzes and games to raise awareness of the AI Principles and measure employees' retention of ethical concepts, such as avoiding unfair bias.

We also piloted a new Moral Imagination workshop, a two-day, live-video immersive set of activities for product teams to walk through the ethical implications of potential AI products. To date, 248 Googlers across 23 Google product and research teams have taken the workshop, resulting in deeper, ongoing AI ethics consultations on product development.

As we develop internal training, we’re committed to incorporating the input of both Googlers and outside experts. This year, when we launched a live workshop to educate our internal user experience and product teams on the concept of AI explainability, we first piloted the workshop with outside experts at the international Trust, Transparency and Control Labs summit in May.

We believe this approach complements programs like our internal AI Principles Ethics Fellows program, a six-month fellowship that this year involved Googlers from 17 different global offices. We also just launched a version of the fellowship program tailored for senior leaders.

Putting the Principles into practice

Our approach to responsible AI innovation starts early, before teams plan a new AI application. When a team starts to build a machine learning (ML) model, dataset or product feature, they can attend office hours with experts to ask questions and engage in analyses using responsible AI tools that Google develops, or seek adversarial proactive fairness (ProFair) testing. Pre-launch, a team then can request an AI Principles review.

AI Principles reviewers are in place to implement a structured assessment to identify, measure and analyze potential risk of harm. The risk rating focuses on the extent to which people and society may be impacted if solutions did not exist or were to fail. Reviewers also consider a growing body of lessons from thousands of previous AI Principles reviews conducted since 2019.

When reviewers find medium- to high-risk issues, such as product exclusion or a potential privacy or security concern, they work with the teams to address these issues. Reviews either result in an approval, approval with conditions or recommendations, or non-approval. New AI applications that might affect multiple product areas are escalated to the Advanced Technology Review Council — a group of senior research, product and business leaders who make the final decision.

To supplement the expertise of our internal AI Principles group members, we often incorporate trusted external advisors. For example, a team was incorporating AI to help build a near real-time dataset to enable reliable measurement of global land cover for environmental and social benefit. They submitted for AI Principles review and then collaborated with the review team to design several safeguards. The review team also worked with third-party experts at the World Resources Institute and BSR. Following the example of the European Commission’s Copernicus mission’s open data and services terms, the product team applied open data principles, making the ML model’s training and test data used to create the dataset, as well as the dataset itself, freely available under CC-BY-4.0, and the model available on Github under an Apache 2.0 license. As a result, both the Health Ethics Committee and Cloud make decisions with specialized expertise, such as establishing policies for potentially winding down the Covid-19 Community Mobility Reports and the Covid-19 Forecaster, respectively, if situations arise that might cause the data quality to degrade. This year, we extended this specialized approach and created a dedicated consumer hardware AI Principles review process.

It’s important to note that product teams across Google engage in everyday responsible AI practices even if not in formal reviews. YouTube is leveraging a more targeted mix of classifiers, keywords in additional languages, and information from regional analysts. This work is a result of collaboration with our researchers who focus on new tools for AI fairness. The Photos team participated in an Equitable AI Research Roundtable (EARR) with a group of external advisors on potential fairness considerations. And the Gboard team deployed a new, privacy-by-design approach to federated machine learning. These examples did not stem from AI Principles reviews, but reflect the adoption of the AI Principles across Google.

Tools and research

In early 2022, to offer easier access to our publications on responsible AI, we curated an external collection of more than 200 research papers focused on the topic. It’s designed to help publishers engage more deeply with their readers – and to help readers find, follow and support the news organisations covering the issues that matter to them. We’re pioneering new technologies that will make our King’s Cross office our most ambitious smart building to date, including a system of 13,500 interconnected devices that will work together to improve energy efficiency in real time.

While the doors of our new King’s Cross development won’t open until 2024, incredible work is already underway nearby. The neighbourhood is home to thousands of our engineers working on products like Android, Wear OS, Search and Google Business Profiles, which are used the world over. In fact, many of the team behind some of our newest products – to be released later this year – are based right here in King’s Cross. We look forward to growing these teams and being a part of the local community’s future growth and development.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan commented:

“London has built a reputation as a world leader in technology and innovation, so I’m delighted to see Google reaffirming its commitment to London with the first wholly owned and designed Google building outside of the United States. And we know that a successful ecosystem must benefit both developers and consumers, which is why we have rules of the road to keep the store secure, protect privacy and prevent fraud. While we strive to make Google Play the best platform for everyone, Android also provides consumers and developers the opportunity to use other app store options.

Today, we’re pleased to share a proposed agreement that will help ensure that both developers and consumers can continue to benefit from Google Play. A vast majority of U.S. developers who earned revenue through Google Play will be eligible to receive money from this fund, if they choose. These individual business owners, sometimes called “solopreneurs,” wear many hats as they run and grow their businesses: salesperson, marketer, accountant, the list goes on.

That’s why one year ago, we launched Google Workspace Individual as a new offering to help these solo business owners grow their businesses with the familiar apps they’re likely already using in their personal life. We’ve heard from customers that Google Workspace Individual helps them focus their time on doing what they love — like meeting with customers and designing personalized services — and less time on recurring tasks like scheduling appointments and sending emails. Since launch, we’ve delivered a number of improvements to provide even more value to customers, and today we’re announcing what’s coming next – electronic signatures right within Google Docs.

Coming soon: Easily sign important documents right in Google Docs

Whether you’re an event planner or digital creator, it can be a challenge to stay on top of contracts and customer agreements that need to be signed as you’re constantly context switching and jumping between different apps to get work done. That’s why we’re natively integrating eSignature in Google Docs, so you can quickly execute agreements from the familiar interface of Docs without having to switch tabs or apps.

Coming soon: Easily request electronic signatures directly in Google Docs

eSignature in Google Docs will take advantage of the same secure-by-design infrastructure and built-in protections Google uses to help secure your information and safeguard your privacy. With the combination of these improvements, it’s easy to make communications as targeted as you like, because you can create multiple email mailing lists within Google Contacts for different audiences and easily tailor the message to each audience.
